Funding · the AB + federal stack · 2026

The Alberta + federal AI funding stack — actually mapped, actually current.

If you're an Alberta business adopting AI workflows in 2026, the non-dilutive money is real. Up to ~55% recovery on R&D engineering salaries via SR&ED + IEG stacking. Up to $5M from PrairiesCan RAII at 50% match. Up to $150K from Alberta Innovates' PDP when paired with a strategic AB partner pilot. $100M federal envelope at NRC IRAP AI Assist, up to 100% of eligible costs. Plus $500M new BDC LIFT loan facility at 2.25% if you buy from Canadian content vendors. The stack is generous, but the application surface is fragmented and the eligibility rules trip up first-time founders. We help AB SMBs qualify, apply, and stack — for the projects we ship together.

CRA scrutiny on AI SR&ED claims has measurably tightened in 2026 — get the documentation right from day one. We won't help with claims that won't survive review.

The stack at a glance

Five levers. Most stack with each other.

Each row below is a separate program. Most can be combined. The right sequence depends on your vintage (years operating), your project (R&D vs. adoption), and whether you have an AB enterprise partner willing to write a letter of support.

SR&ED + IEG

~55% recovery on AB R&D salaries

Federal SR&ED 35% refundable on first $6M of qualified expenditures (2026 cap). AB IEG 8% base + 20% on incremental. Stacks. Cloud compute now eligible.

NRC IRAP AI Assist

Up to 100% via assigned ITA

$100M federal envelope dedicated to AI. Pitched through an Industrial Technology Advisor. Typical first-time award: $75K-$200K. 80% on salaries, 50% on subcontractors.

Alberta Innovates PDP

$150K matched + AB partner

$150K to commercialize a working product (TRL 7-9) with a strategic AB partner. 1:1 match (cash + in-kind). Continuous intake. NB: AB Innovates is being trimmed ~30% in 2026 — apply early.

PrairiesCan RAII

$5M @ 50% match

$250K-$5M, 50% admissible-expenses match. Open to Dec 31, 2028. Eligibility: 1+ FTE, 2+ years operating in the Prairies. ~90 business-day decision standard.

BDC LIFT

$500M @ 2.25% (Cdn content)

New April 2026. $25K-$5M loans for digital adoption. 2.25% preferential rate when you buy from Canadian-content vendors (BITRAGE qualifies). The practical replacement for the dead CDAP program.

Community Futures AB

Up to $150K rural/small

Loans up to $150K for AB SMBs under $1M revenue, especially rural. Slower than BDC but simpler eligibility for very small operators.

Program 1 · SR&ED (federal) + Innovation Employment Grant (Alberta)

The 55% engineering-salary recovery

Federal Scientific Research & Experimental Development credit (35% refundable for CCPCs on the first $6M of qualified expenditures, raised from $3M in the 2026 reform) stacks with Alberta's permanent Innovation Employment Grant (8% base + 20% on incremental R&D above prior-year average). Cloud compute is now SR&ED-eligible (a major 2026 win for AI shops). Combined effective recovery on Alberta AI engineering salaries lands at 50-55%.

Eligibility

  • CCPC (Canadian-Controlled Private Corporation)
  • Real technological uncertainty (questions you cannot answer at project start)
  • Systematic experimentation, documented contemporaneously
  • Public corps now also eligible for 35% refundable as of 2026 reform

What's eligible

  • Salaries of staff doing the qualifying work
  • Subcontractor costs (with limits)
  • Materials consumed in experimentation
  • Cloud-compute costs (NEW in 2026 reform — major AI win)
  • Capital — restored in 2026 reform

2026 caution

CRA scrutiny on AI SR&ED claims has measurably tightened. Common rejection triggers: characterizing implementation work as research, missing project journals, lack of hypothesis statements, framing prompt engineering or fine-tuning of a known approach as "novel." Document the questions you can't answer at the start — that's the technological uncertainty. Don't claim integration work as R&D.

Program 2 · NRC IRAP — AI Assist

$100M federal AI envelope, ITA-mediated

NRC IRAP's most generous-ever AI-specific commitment: $100M over 5 years. Up to 100% of eligible project costs covered (minus a $500 SME fee). The path in is to be assigned an Industrial Technology Advisor and pitch yourself as building or integrating GenAI / DNN / DL into a core product. Typical first-time SME award: $75K-$200K. Up to 80% on salaries, 50% on subcontractor costs. Stacks with SR&ED.

How to get an ITA

Call the NRC IRAP intake line (1-877-994-4727) or apply via nrc.canada.ca. Ask specifically for an AI Assist ITA. Have ready: your corporate name, what you're building, AB SMB customers you're targeting, your team's AI experience.

What ITAs look for

  • Working prototype or production system already shipping
  • Genuine GenAI / DNN / DL technical depth (not just "we use APIs")
  • Clear customer pull — AB SMB pipeline counts
  • Co-investment plan beyond IRAP money

Stacking notes

IRAP money is non-dilutive and stacks with SR&ED on the same project (you can't double-count the same dollar but you can stack different cost categories). Stacks with PDP if the PDP partner-pilot is a separate scope. Does NOT stack with RAII for the same admissible expenses.

Program 3 · Alberta Innovates Product Demonstration Program

$150K matched, with a strategic AB partner

Up to $150K to commercialize a working product (TRL 7-9) with a strategic Alberta partner. Continuous intake — no quarterly cycles. 1:1 match (cash + in-kind allowed). The application writes itself when paired with a paid pilot at ATB, AHS, the City of Calgary, or one of the oil and gas majors. Apply early in 2026: Alberta Innovates is being trimmed ~30% (about $53-60M off a $250M base) and program amalgamation under the new CEO is in motion. The agency now has authority to take minority equity stakes, but for grant programs expect fewer, bigger cheques and faster intake closures.

Critical eligibility

  • AB-incorporated (not just AB-located)
  • Working product at TRL 7+ — not pre-prototype
  • Strategic AB partner with signed letter of support — this is the gating asset
  • Match commitment (cash + in-kind acceptable)

Strategic-partner playbook

The fastest way to qualify is to pair the PDP application with a paid pilot at ATB, AHS, the City of Calgary, an O&G major, or any AB enterprise that needs your workflow. The partner writes a 1-page letter committing to the pilot scope, dollar value, and timeline. Without this, the application is dead.

Equity-stake authority

Alberta Innovates now has authority to take minority equity stakes in AB tech companies (Bill 27, April 2026). For very early-stage companies this can be a path to capital that's not currently a grant. Treat as separate from PDP — the equity track is by invitation, not application.

Program 4 · PrairiesCan Regional AI Initiative (RAII)

$5M cap, 50% match, 2-year vintage required

PrairiesCan's flagship AI program: $250K-$5M per project, 50% match on admissible expenses. Open to December 31, 2028. The biggest non-dilutive cheque available to a small AB team — but eligibility requires at least one FTE and two years of operating history in a Prairie province. New companies are filtered out. ~90 business-day decision standard. Two tracks: productization (build the AI product) and adoption (integrate AI into operations) — the adoption track is the right fit when an AB SMB customer wants to fund a Workflow Studio engagement.

Eligibility

  • 1+ FTE — sole proprietors are out
  • 2+ years operating in AB / SK / MB
  • For-profit or not-for-profit
  • Real co-investment commitment (your 50% match must be actual cash, not just labour)

Productization vs. adoption

Productization: building an AI product to commercialize. Adoption: integrating AI into your operations. The adoption track is the right fit when a BITRAGE customer wants RAII to fund a Workflow Studio engagement — they're the applicant, BITRAGE is the vendor.

BITRAGE's own RAII fit

BITRAGE.AI doesn't yet meet the 2-year vintage requirement. Earliest BITRAGE-led RAII application is mid-2027. Until then, BITRAGE customers can apply on the adoption track with BITRAGE as the named vendor — we help write the application.

Program 5 · BDC LIFT + post-CDAP alternatives

$500M digital-adoption loan facility (April 2026)

The Canada Digital Adoption Program ended March 2024 and Budgets 2025/2026 didn't include a direct successor. Anyone still pitching CDAP is out of date. The practical replacement is BDC LIFT — a new $500M loan facility launched April 2026, $25K-$5M per loan, at 2.25% preferential rate when you buy from Canadian-content vendors (BITRAGE qualifies). For very small operators (under $1M revenue, often rural), Community Futures Alberta is the slower but simpler path with up to $150K loans.

BDC LIFT mechanics

  • $25K-$5M loans for digital adoption
  • 2.25% rate when ≥50% of project value is Canadian-content vendors
  • BITRAGE.AI counts as a Canadian-content vendor
  • Apply via bdc.ca/lift (April 2026 onward)

Community Futures AB

Best for AB SMBs under $1M revenue, especially rural. Up to $150K loans. Slower decision than BDC. Often pairs with mentorship + advisor support. Find your local CFAB office at communityfuturesalberta.ca.

What CDAP is NOT replaced by

ISED's "SME AI Adoption Blueprint" is a policy framework, not a funding program. Anyone telling you otherwise is out of date. Old CDAP advisor networks have largely pivoted to selling other services — verify before paying anyone for "CDAP-like" advice.

How BITRAGE helps

We help with funding for the projects we ship together.

If we're shipping a Workflow Studio engagement or starter-stack rollout for your AB business, we help you map which funding programs apply and prepare the application paperwork. We don't run a standalone grant-writing service — that market is well-served by Boast.ai, Granted, and the CPA firms. We help with the projects we're shipping anyway.

PDP partner-pilot

If you have a strategic AB partner willing to write a letter of support, we help structure the pilot and the PDP application around the Workflow Studio engagement.

RAII adoption-track

If your AB business has 2+ years operating history and 1+ FTE, we help draft the RAII adoption-track application with BITRAGE as the named vendor. Decision is ~90 business days.

BDC LIFT @ 2.25%

BITRAGE qualifies as Canadian-content. We help you frame the project to hit the ≥50% Canadian-content threshold, unlocking the 2.25% preferential rate.

SR&ED documentation

We document technological-uncertainty journals from day one of any Workflow Studio engagement so your CPA can build a defensible SR&ED claim. We don't file the claim — your CPA does. We provide the substrate.

What we won't do: we won't help with funding applications for projects we're not shipping. We won't help with claims that won't survive CRA review. We won't promise approval — these are competitive programs and the decisions aren't ours.

Funding FAQ

Is BITRAGE a registered grant-writing firm?

No. We're a workflow-automation product company. We help with funding applications only for projects we're shipping together — it's part of the Workflow Studio engagement, not a separate service. For standalone grant writing, we refer to Boast.ai, Granted, or your CPA's R&D-credit practice.

What if I don't qualify for any of these?

Most AB SMBs qualify for at least SR&ED + IEG (if they're doing real R&D) and BDC LIFT (if buying Canadian-content). Community Futures AB is the floor for very small / rural operators. The "fit check" email is free — we'll tell you straight whether anything realistic is on the table.

How long does it take to get money?

SR&ED + IEG: claimed at year-end with your T2; refund typically 3-6 months after filing. IRAP AI Assist: 6-12 weeks once an ITA is engaged. PDP: 6-12 weeks. RAII: ~90 business days. BDC LIFT: 2-6 weeks. Community Futures: 4-8 weeks.

Is BITRAGE itself going through this stack?

Yes. We're documenting our own SR&ED + IEG claim from day one. We're working through the IRAP ITA assignment. We'll be eligible for RAII in mid-2027 once we hit the 2-year operating threshold. The PDP application waits on a strategic AB partner pilot — exactly the kind of thing our enterprise customers help create.

Why is Alberta Innovates getting cut?

Provincial fiscal pressure. The 30% AI-budget reduction announced in 2026 is real, but program amalgamation under the new CEO + the new minority-equity-stake authority changes the shape, not just the size. Apply early in any fiscal year. Don't depend on three concurrent AI grants from the same agency.

What does CRA actually look for in AI SR&ED claims?

Real technological uncertainty (questions you couldn't answer at project start), systematic experimentation, contemporaneous documentation. They reject claims that characterize implementation work as research, claims missing project journals, claims framing prompt engineering or fine-tuning of a known approach as "novel research." Document the questions, not the implementation.

Can my customer apply for funding for a BITRAGE engagement?

Yes — RAII adoption track, BDC LIFT, and Community Futures Alberta are all designed for the customer (the SMB adopting AI) to apply with BITRAGE as the named vendor. We help structure the application. PDP is more often the vendor (BITRAGE) applying with the customer as the strategic AB partner.
